n8n alternative

An n8n alternative, for when automation has to be governed.

Most teams looking past n8n are not unhappy with the builder. They have reached a requirement it was not their job to build: spend limits that stop a run, a person who must approve a step, one control plane for many customers. Here is how OCNORA meets each one, what moving across involves, and where n8n is still the better choice.

Every n8n figure on this page is quoted from a page n8n publishes, with the date we read it, and is the same figure the full comparison prints. Every OCNORA statement shows its evidence level and the date it was checked. We do not state what n8n lacks.

Who is looking

Who searches for a n8n alternative.

  • Platform teams whose workflows now call models, and who need a spend limit that holds rather than a report after the fact.
  • Operations teams where a step must wait for a named person before it writes to a system of record.
  • Software companies that want to offer workflow automation to their own customers, inside their own product.
  • Teams who want each workflow checked for broken connections and expressions before it is published.
Why, and how OCNORA answers

The reasons, one by one.

Each reason is a need, not a verdict on n8n. Where n8n publishes something relevant, it is quoted with its source.

  1. You want to offer automation inside your own product

Your customers should build workflows in your product, under your brand, each tenant isolated with its own budgets and secrets. Read the licence below against your own case; we do not interpret another vendor’s licence.

Source-available licence, as n8n publishes it

OCNORA: OCNORA is a commercial product and does not publish its source; self-hosting runs on an offline signed licence.

    How OCNORA answers it

OCNORA runs on OCNORA Cloud, on the customer’s own cloud from the Docker Compose file or the Helm chart in the backend repository, or embedded in the customer’s product. The Helm chart runs each process role as its own deployment, including Workflow Health, Auto Fix and the task orchestrator.

  2. AI spend has to stop, not just be reported

Model calls are now part of production workflows, and a runaway loop has to be held before the invoice arrives.

    How OCNORA answers it

Every model call is written to a ledger with its tokens and USD cost. Monthly token and USD budgets per workspace and per provider (on Embedded, per tenant) are checked before a call from an estimate and reconciled after it; a circuit breaker holds further calls when a budget is used up or a provider keeps failing.

  3. A person must approve some steps

Refunds, access grants and writes to a system of record wait for a named approver, and the decision belongs in the record.

    How OCNORA answers it

A human.prompt step suspends a run until a person answers or its timeout lapses, then routes on the answer or on the timeout branch. The decision is recorded with the run.

  4. Nothing should reach production unchecked

A broken connection or expression should be found when the workflow is saved, not when it first runs.

    How OCNORA answers it

Workflow Health validates each workflow and pre-flights its connections on save and publish. Auto Fix repairs one broken node at a time and re-checks; a code finding it cannot answer can go to a host runner as a draft pull request or an issue; every other finding is handed to a person.

Migration

Moving from n8n: the importer, and its limits.

The importer reads n8n workflow JSON and produces an OCNORA workflow that goes straight through Workflow Health. You see what mapped, what was rewritten, and what needs a decision before anything runs.

  1. STEP 1

    Export from n8n

Download the workflow as JSON from n8n (one file per workflow, or the whole folder).

  2. STEP 2

    Import into OCNORA

Drop the file on the Workflows page. The importer maps the nodes and shows a report: mapped, rewritten, stand-in.

  3. STEP 3

    Connect and run Health

Fill the connection requests the importer created, then let Workflow Health validate, pre-flight and dry-run the result.

In the n8n fileWhat the importer does
~45 n8n node typesMapped one-to-one onto OCNORA node types, with parameters carried across.
IF nodesBecome control.branch rules with the same conditions.
ExpressionsRewritten from n8n syntax to OCNORA expressions and checked by the validator.
Sticky notesDropped. The workflow description keeps their text.
Unknown node typesBecome stand-in nodes that keep the original configuration. You can request the app from inside the builder, and the team sees the demand.
CredentialsNever in the file, never imported. The importer creates a connection request per credential the workflow needs.
Being fair

When to stay with n8n.

We would rather you pick the right tool than pick us and regret it.

  • You want Git-backed environments

n8n states Git as a single source of truth with isolated dev and production environments. OCNORA has versions with restore and diff, but not Git-backed promotion.

  • You want source-available software

n8n publishes its source under the Sustainable Use License. OCNORA does not publish its source.

  • Procurement requires a SOC 2 report

OCNORA documents its controls and shares them under NDA, and does not claim an attestation it does not hold.

OCNORA vs n8n puts everything both vendors publish side by side, with every source. The n8n figures on this page came from:
